Evil Thoughts

As a continuation of our interaction to 8th November 2020 Sunday’s message of “Guard Your Heart”, we explore the topic of evil thoughts.

Why Does God Warns Us About Having Evil Thoughts?

In Genesis 6:5-6, the All-knowing God stated that He knows what is happening and it grieves his heart when people continue to act in wickedness.

Genesis 6:5-6 The Lord observed the extent of human wickedness on the earth, and he saw that everything they thought or imagined was consistently and totally evil. 6 So the Lord was sorry he had ever made them and put them on the earth. It broke his heart.

God is watching everyone as stated in Proverbs 15:3 “The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good.”

We Are What We Think!

Our thoughts become a reflection of who we really are, and evil thoughts lead a person to actions of wickedness and oftentimes, self-harm. As one thinks, he becomes and the thoughts influence and causes the person to carry out his or her thinking and imagination and when it is evil, it that could and probably would leads to consistent and total evilness or wickedness. Think of the family charged in court for physically abusing a female friend who has a mild intellectual disability and almost killed her and getting the victim to eat noodles with urine in it or the overseas religious organization who abused their position of trust to commit crimes to the children in their care.

Within Us There Is Struggle

Paul tells us of the struggle sin and the Spirit within us is having in Galatians 5:17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

God created us with the ability to made choices and if we choose to allow evil thoughts to continue to occupy and reign in our lives, then Genesis 6:7 will happen to us.

Genesis 6:7 And the Lord said, “I will wipe this human race I have created from the face of the earth. Yes, and I will destroy every living thing—all the people, the large animals, the small animals that scurry along the ground, and even the birds of the sky. I am sorry I ever made them.”

But if we chose to allow the Spirit to take control, then Genesis 6:8-9 will be a model for us where God is in fellowship with us like He was with Noah.

Gen 6:8-9 But Noah found favor with the Lord. 9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.

What is Evil Thought?

Things that we think in our minds work themselves out in evil actions designed to get even with others or harm others. For example, John felt abused in the office by Paul, and the thought of getting even for being treated badly results in John thinking about how to put Paul down in front of his boss. John starts to think and develop in his mind how to carry out his intention. That is evil thought. How about the worker who was mistreated by her boss and feeling inferior among her colleagues because of the insults rendered by the boss, it results in her wishing harm would come upon the boss because of the scolding. The evil thought maybe that the boss would have a car accident that would make her lose her legs, or etc. That is evil thought. God knows that when we plot evil in our hearts, the plotting hurts first before it hurts others, and it would displease God at the same time because we are not relying on Him.

Since God is in full control of all situations, can we as His children trust Him to protect us and can we trust Him to work all things out for our good? Romans 8:28-29.

Romans 8:28-29 NLT

28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. 29 For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

At the same time, are we aware the deceptions of the devil are evil thoughts? This means that the evil thoughts originate from the devil and if we entertain it, we are in co labour with the devil.

We learn this from James 3:15 For jealousy and selfishness are not God’s kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.

God Is Able To Help Us

Let us allow the Holy Spirit to control our thoughts so that it would result in good rather than evil as Paul instructed us in 1 Corinthians 10:13. God is faithful! Paul also encourages us to think about what is honourable and good rather than evil thoughts in Philippians 4:8

Philippians 4:8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

1 Corinthians 10:13

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Conclusion

Let us allow God to reign in our thoughts and lives rather than the devil deceiving us into harm’s way.

Psalm 97:10-12 NLT

10 You who love the Lord, hate evil!

He protects the lives of his godly people

and rescues them from the power of the wicked.

11 Light shines on the godly,

and joy on those whose hearts are right.

12 May all who are godly rejoice in the Lord

    and praise his holy name!
